During my second sunrise at Vermejo in New Mexico, breakfast burrito in hand – rising early to head for viewpoints is part of the experience – I realized just what a vast expanse I’d landed in. Ted Turner’s nature reserve in the southern Rocky Mountains encompasses more than 558,000 acres – an area slightly larger than that of Tokyo, my home city, which felt worlds away. Wind whipped over the rise where I stood watching elk traipse across dew-covered grass.
